About DNW

DNW, the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels, was established by the German Aerospace Center DLR and the Dutch Aerospace Centre NLR.

DNW is a non-profit foundation under Dutch law, with headquarters in Marknesse in the Netherlands. Its tunnels are situated in a number of locations in the Netherlands and Germany: Marknesse, Amsterdam, Braunschweig, and Göttingen.

DNW provides solutions for the experimental simulation requirements of aerodynamic research and development projects. These projects can originate in the course of industrial development of new products or in the research community (universities, research establishments or research consortia). Most of the industrial development projects originate in the aeronautical industry, but the automotive, civil engineering, shipbuilding and sports industries have also benefited from DNW’s capabilities.

DNW’s activities are focused on achieving the following objectives:

Being the number one provider of specialized wind

DNW maintains and constantly strengthens its leading role through the use of advanced technologies, a flexible organization and a highly motivated and skilled team.

Providing strategic testing capabilities

For this purpose DNW makes use of the EU initiatives for improving and optimizing the research infrastructure and collaborates with related organizations.

Actively marketing its skills worldwide

Customers can benefit from DNW’s sophisticated wind tunnel facilities, combined with its extensive experience in in-depth and meticulous testing. In return, DNW aims to obtain a maximum of scale benefits and to be exposed to a wide range of challenges. Any knowledge and experience gained can subsequently be shared with its user community.

aboutus2For efficient and flexible operations, DNW operates in a decentralised structure under a unified management and supervision. The seat of its Management is in Marknesse, at the location of its largest wind tunnel. DNW’s Board, the supervisory body of the Foundation, consists of representatives of the parent institutes NLR and DLR, and is complemented by representatives of the relevant ministries from Germany and the Netherlands.

In order to assure the compatibility of DNW’s development strategy with the long-term needs of the research and development market, an Advisory Committee consisting of high-level representatives of participants in the market provides strategic advice and information to DNW.

DNW’s extensive project capabilities and technical infrastructure are described in the sections Skills and Specialties and Wind Tunnels. Often wind tunnel models or parts thereof are designed and manufactured at the workshops of the NLR. Detailed information can be taken from https://www.nlr.org/capabilities/wind-tunnel-models/. DLR can also support wind tunnel measurements at DNW with its expertise in aeroelasticity and development of measurement techniques.
